2oceansvibe.com is a local Cape Town based lifestyle website run by Seth Rotherham.
Seth is in his late 20’s and lives on the Cape Town Atlantic Seaboard. In his quest to live by the 2oceansvibe slogan, ‘Work is a sideline, live the holiday’, Seth makes the most of the city of Cape Town – enjoying the best there is on offer, from sea and sand to restaurants and nightclubs, insisting on only the best service wherever he goes.
With a particular weakness for the finer things in life (including his ‘angels’), Seth spends his days (and nights) playing nicely with Cape Town’s fun loving locals and visitors.
Using a special brand of humour (and unable to avoid his own idiosyncrasies) – his thoughts, reports and write-ups often result in brutal, hilarious commentary. This is further fuelled by Seth’s unique network of friends and contacts which, due to their great diversity, allow him more accurate and further insight into topical conversation.
You’ll find yourself slipping into the 2oceansvibe community pretty swiftly. You’ll see why so many people are unable to get through the day without their ‘daily dose of 2oceans’.
Interview: Seth Rotherham from 2oceansvibe

2oceansvibe is a ridiculously popular blog (35 000 unique readers a month) authored by a ridiculously funny man called Seth Rotherham. He’s built up his blog’s culture around a simple phrase – “work is a sideline, live the holiday”. This is exactly what he seems to be doing – while taking his friends (often featured on the blog) and favourite brands along for the ride. We tracked him down via email to answer some questions in the way only he can. Enjoy.

Blogs are arguably not the normal home for the suave and almost-naked-woman surrounded – how did u get into it?
I started 7 years ago before blogging was really happening and/or popular. I just made the site to showcase pictures of friends and beautiful angels taken at parties the previous weekend. Mainly just for my close mates. I used to write the odd funny comment next to the pics and strangers started telling me how they found it funny. That felt weird. And nice. Like when you take a leak in a wetsuit. I continued and here we are today (sans wetsuit).
Work is a Sideline, Live the Holiday – is 2oceansvibe your day job?
Absolutely. Fortunately I’ve developed a system whereby I don’t really have to work. This allows me to focus on 2oceansvibe and, as a result, I can produce this online reality show type vibe and write about what I’m doing which happens to be chilling out doing nice things with nice people. It appeals to the reader as it’s stuff that we all want to do.
Was there a moment of shining light when you thought ‘I’m a lifestyle blogger!’ and if so when did it happen?
Jeez. Probably the day when a 2oceansvibe cocktail appeared on the Caprice Cocktail menu. But seriously, nothing has changed. I started before blogging was a word – I’m just writing about what everyone is talking about.
We like the way you manage to keep advertising entertaining on your blog. Do you find it a tough balance to strike?
Not in the slightest. I only advertise brands I like or want to try. If they let me down, or repeatedly let down/offend my readers (my most adored treasure), they won’t be there any longer. Part of the reason people come to 2oceansvibe is to get recommendations on stuff. I’ve always written about products and brands; what I eat, wear, have and do anyway, whether they’re paid for or not – it’s all real.

You’ve evolved a whole culture around your writing, with characters and ‘angels’ (the number of times you mention the word
‘vibe’ is quite something) – how much conscious planning goes into it?
Not much at all. That is exactly how we/I talk. Nothing on the site is contrived. My friends have always referred to each other as the characters shown on the 2oceansvibe characters list. The Chief, for example, would call me and say, “Have you heard the latest spice about our boy?” I’d go, “Which one.” He’d go, “The Insurance Broker.” “Oooh, no I did not… tell me more!!” and so it goes on.
“The Safe House” has always been called that (2oceansvibe or not) and it’s because it is high up in Camps Bay and lets me look down over everything – feeling safe. We always call chicks angels and I think it’s good that we do – because they are!
Vibe is just the most versatile word. “What’s the vibe” – “Check that guy’s vibe!” – “Howz your vibe?” – “A boring vibe” – “Quite a vibe” – “That angel is giving me a vibe” – it goes one. Which vibe are you referring to, exactly?
Can we expect character off-shoots? And have you had any ego fuelled co-star issues?
Ja, there is another whole dimension with that character vibe. If I open it up it’ll go mental, so I’m saving it for when 2oceansvibe Media is a bit bigger. Then I want to give all the characters various skills. They’ll be genuine skills that each particular character has. They could be turned into a game, I don’t know. If it does, then The TBG will obviously have the most power. But seriously, I think they’ll just start to feature slowly but surely in various 2oceansvibe TV sketches, until we own the world. Just kidding.
Did I tell you we’re working on 2oceansvibe, The Movie? Seriously.. Maybe a book as well. It’s all pretty radical to think about if you try this.. [passes you the joint].
Do you promote your blog, or did you when you started? (I can’t imagine you reading posts like 10 tips for growing your readership or Problogger).
Nah, there was never any promotion – purely word of mouth. There are little scandals along the way which allowed the site to gain new readers and continue forward. The most recent was the high profile public spat I had with the Idols Judges. Which resulted in me responding to Randy Abrahams with a video which has been watched over 80,000 times now.
I just grab the bull by the horns when the moment presents itself. I think the secret behind 2oceansvibe is a variation of dare-I-say-it “The Secret” (which is a variation of the same thing covered in every good business book of all time). I look after brands and people I trust. I talk about it. The readers trust me, and they follow my lead. In return the vibe grows. Because it’s a good vibe built on trust. We don’t interact with dicks. Ever.
Do you KNOW how awesome it is to finally find a trustworthy, efficient panel beater in Cape Town? His top service and the way he impressed me will be rewarded 10 fold, because I recommended him to my readers who will go in blindly and trust him. In return, he will NOT let them down. That’s just an example, but that is without a doubt the single most important factor driving/promoting 2oceansvibe – good people (search in Google for cape town panel beater, by the way. You’ll find him there. It was ranking at number 1 the last time I looked). Do you think goldfish did so well because they’re dicks? No, they’re the nicest, cleanest, warmest couple of dudes I have ever met – and look what’s coming to them.
It’s basics. People who run around pointing fingers and blaming others (why me, why me!!!) need to stop and have a good think about what is really going on. Who REALLY is to blame?
On your blog (as I’m writing these questions) is a picture of a shark, an albino dolphin, Britney Spears “looking ok in a bikini” and a review of a Stephen Fry DVD. How do you decide what makes the cut?
Ja, I get sent a stack of stuff from readers and I could probably just run it purely with that content and you probably couldn’t tell. I use some of the stuff that really gets me going, otherwise I just email back saying thanks. My reporting on the fire was 100% from readers and Twitter. I didn’t even know there was a fire but woke up and found the full story and pictures in my inbox when I woke up!
That’s one of the very cool things about the site and why I am so protective and loyal to my readers, because they understand what vibe I’m going for. I thank each reader that sends me stuff that I use (you’ll notice little [thanks xyz]’s at the bottom of some stories).
Image credit: Andrew VC – verstercohen.com
It fluctuates (the content of the site), but I often scroll through the front page before I publish a story (or series of stories in a particular order), just to see if the mix is good. There is no strict recipe, but if I see that I haven’t mentioned a beautiful model for a while, it may well be time to do so! I go through spurts of writing and, depending on the weed and whisky levels on a Sunday night, I can churn out up to 20 articles and save them all. Then I can time them to come out at certain times over the next couple of days and spend that time on the beach.
I also go on an annual “Strengthening Ties Tour” overseas to spend time with the various characters overseas. In June I’m away for a month. I’ll use local Cape Town content from the readers and then write about my trip. Might do some 2oceansvibe TV clips with my mother in the kitchen in Provence, showing us how to cook French meals after three bottles of Veuve Clicquot (It’s a CONSTANT champagne-fest with my mother when we get together).
You’ve launched 2oceansvibe TV – what has the viewership been like in comparison with your written posts?
It’s been pretty radical. Any video I make now gets a minimum of 20,000 views. I had to set up 2oceansvibe.tv to showcase and handle all of it. The recent interview with Billy Zane has had over 30,000 views in a week and, as mentioned before, the Randy Abrahams video got over 80,000 views so far.
I’m definitely focussing my attention in that direction. That’s where it’s all going. I’ll have a regular show soon, just sorting out some other stuff first! I think a Thursday weekly video of a model in lingerie doing the weekend weather for Cape Town (pointing out different weather-dependent spots to go to on an aerial shot – like we did with the Cowley sisters in the Billy Zane interview) is a good start.
The readership of the actual blog is about 120,000 visits a month, 200,000 page views – all from 35,000 absolute unique readers (if you visit the site 30 times in that month, you are still just 1 unique reader). BTW, just out of interest, the readership is roughly 50/50 male/female and 70% from South Africa. The ex-pats in London come second place at 12% and then the rest of the World.
Do you have any other plans for expanding the 2oceansvibe empire?
Definitely. Under wraps for now, but there will be various offshoots using the 2oceansvibe brand over various platforms. All linked to the vibe, ensuring that same level of trust. Cape Town holidays, job opportunities, loyalty cards etc. Online radio shows. Online TV shows etc. etc. It’ll get there.
Is blogging a means to an end? Build the blog and the business will follow?
Nah, I’m just cruising along going through the motions. There is no guide for this stuff. It’s new for everyone. It’s not like the old days where you could chat to someone about opening up the best Roofing Company. This is an ever changing/advancing technological media playground – you just charge ahead and learn as you go along. .
Really, it was never my intention. As I said, I was just putting up photos for my friends. It grew from there and only started making real money about two years ago. Until then it was a hobby. But the groundswell keeps you going. You don’t know why, but you continue regardless. The feedback I get from the general public also pushes me. When they tell me how something made them piss themselves, it feels good. I’m very into finding out exactly WHAT phrase or sentence got people rolling – I like to fine tune it. Very often it’s something quite obscure! The Kitesurfer, for example, carries on about the one time I referred to Nicole Ritchie (in her fatty boom boom days when she was hanging with Paris Hilton) as a “Pork Sword.” Amazing! He still laughs about it.
Where do you get your online inspiration from?
It’s just me, really. That’s how I live. That’s what I do. That’s what I want to talk about. Like I said, there weren’t really any blogs around at the start. I just write about what I do, what I like/don’t like, what amuses me, what makes me angry as well as the usual sex, money, fast cars, champagne and suntans! Stuff real people talk about at dinners and braais. They don’t talk about the other stuff that fills the front pages. They’re over that. We ALL are! They want to talk about pink dolphins, shark attacks, Stephen Fry’s DVD, Britney’s nipple slip, Dirty Skirts concerts, fires on the mountain, the best panel beater in cape town, the latest Woolworths quick-meal, beautiful people, beautiful things and how awesome the sunset is. Seriously, you don’t need inspiration, this shit comes naturally to all of us. I genuinely take a pic of the sunset from The Safe House nearly every night. Why, I don’t know – I just feel driven to do it! Cape Town also happens to be one of the only places in the world where the locals CONSTANTLY take pictures of their own home town. Have you noticed that? Try find that anywhere else in the world.

Living and working large: an interview with 2oceansvibe’s Seth Rotherham
Posted on 10 September 2009 by gillm
If you’re a blogger, you want to be Seth Rotherham of 2oceansvibe, the very successful one-man blog that is consistently in Amatomu’s top 10 most popular list. 2oceansvibe has more than 40 000 unique users a month, 200 000 page views and users spend an average of about three to four minutes on site. Seth’s blog is a laugh and I love his “work is a sideline, live the holiday” persona. He gives the original Mr Conspicuous Consumption, David Bullard, a run for his money. So, guess what?, Grubstreet has discovered that this is in fact his day job; it’s not a persona. Read this Q&A with the savvy marketer to find out more about how he did it… in Cape Town, the south of France and Hollywood.
Q. You appear to have loads of advertising on your blog. Is this your day job?
A. Yeah, it’s my day job. It’s been going for seven years now and if you look at the level the site’s at, it’s got a Google page ranking of 5 out of 10, which is very high.
Q. And is it just you?
A. Yeah, it’s just me and it’s very much the only thing I do.
Q. And are you turning a profit?
A. Absolutely. My regular sponsors pay about R5 000 each plus their clothing and apparel and things that I get with it. And a one-off article on my site like the odd editorial for premium brands, that’s R10 000.
Q. To me you’re an excellent example of how the web has democratised publishing because you don’t need to be a JSE-listed company to be a publisher. Although there is a high skills barrier. If you can’t write, you wouldn’t be able to do what you’re doing.
A. Absolutely. I remember at school trying my heart out to write English essays and I don’t think I got higher than a B. I was always trying to write like Wilbur Smith and no one at school told you that you should just find your own style… What I write is not necessarily grammatically correct but I do it on the website because of readability. I write the way I talk… and it seems to work well. People would rather read my website in that style with the odd swear word thrown in that assures them that it’s a private entity rather than reading the crap the journalists are writing. Newspaper like the Cape Times are crap. They just regurgitate and there’s no research. And this constant reporting on Jacob Zuma and Helen Zille. People are tired of it… How many times do we have to read that the world cup stadium won’t be ready in time?
Q. It seems to me that the most successful blogs are suffused with the blogger’s personality.
A. Definitely. You can see there’s a definite brand of humour I’m throwing around in my articles and videos. I don’t get it right all the time as you can see I’m in rush but sometimes I sit down for a few hours and write a really funny, long story.
Q. I’m sure people read your blog and think “Jeez, he’s got the perfect job as he doesn’t work in the corporate world” but blogging is relentless.
A. Well, I love writing. I love having a say and swaying people’s opinions and promoting things that I believe are good and right and cool. So the blog is 100% me and to be in Los Angeles or the south of France and be writing about it — I mean what more do you want to do in life? And to be doing it and be paid for it is wonderful. You’ve seen the slogan of the website is “Work is a sideline. Live the holiday” and I do and encourage people to find their niche. A friend of mine is a surfer and he’s just stopped his normal job and become a surf photographer and he’s good at it too. I’ve done my time as a nine to fiver – I worked in London for three years. I feel for the nine to fivers out there and, God, we need them. I know it’s not that easy to take the risk if you’ve got a kid but people find that the risk after you take the jump is not that great.
Q. What makes 2oceansvibe so popular? Do you think it’s got to do with you selling a lifestyle to which people aspire?
A. Absolutely. One hundred percent of my reasoning to having palm trees etc (on the website) is that – like sex –holiday sells. The holiday life, the champagne, fast cars, sea and sun and beautiful people – people love that. They want to be on holiday.
Q. On the technical aspects, are you using Wordpress?
A. Yes.
Q. And do you do it all yourself?
A. I’ve got a guy who helps with the development. I’ll ask him to help if something’s not working or I’ll ask him: ‘How do I do this?’
Q. Everybody needs a smart buddy like that. I think you’re marketing genius.
A. Gee, thanks. I come from a marketing background. I’ve got a degree in marketing and my dad is a marketing director. My mom’s always been an MD of whatever company she’s been at.
Q. It strikes me that there a lot of very smart people in the blogosphere whom 20 years ago would have worked in the corporate world. What do you think about that?
A. I’ve always found shortcuts. I fancied myself as a writer so I thought I’d do a blog. I’d like to have my own TV show so I just made my own little web show and the next thing I found myself in Hollywood with Pauly Shore. I suppose it’s sneaky routes into things rather than going through training to be a journalist – like working at the Cape Times or something. I mean, come on, they’d pay me fuck all.
| Six awards including blog of the year, best original writing and most humorous. Did this come as a surprise?
With six nominations, I certainly was hoping to get at least one or two. But six? And the best overall? No – I simply refused to think that far. I lived with professional rugby players for a few years in my early 20’s and talking about winning before a match was taboo in our house. “Jinxing” the match and all that, is an absolute no-no! When did you start blogging and why? About seven years ago, before blogs were really blogs. I just made a website to showcase photos of parties that my friends and I had been to the previous weekend. Just for everyone to see. In the days when my buddies had internet access, but no email. Then I started commenting on the pics and writing little stories to fill the spaces. Strangers told me they enjoyed it which was weird – but appealing. They found it funny and urged me to keep writing. I enjoyed writing (and still do) so I continued! What inspires you to blog everyday? Just everything I do and see and think. Like any discussion you would have with a friend in a bar or a braai or a restaurant – exactly the same thing, except I type it for everyone else to see as well. Whatever I’m talking about, I’m writing about. Any tips for aspiring SA bloggers? Stop talking about it and get started. Write a minimum of one article a day – even if it’s a pic and a one liner – and it’ll get going. If you want to do it and you think you’ll love doing What blog creation tool do you use? My blog creation tool is Wordpress. But my secret weapon is a program called Chris Mills – which is the guy who runs www.imod.co.za (winner of Best Science and Technology Blog) and who’s behind all the deep hard-core coding behind the 2oceansvibe Wordpress platform. He does all of my friends’ and family’s blogs. Your personal choice of SA Blog of the Year? I couldn’t choose one out of the other nominees. I’m a regular visitor of http://sarocks.co.za/, http://imod.co.za/, http://watkykjy.co.za/, http://from-the-couch.com/ and http://www.matthewbuckland.com/ Is the money from blogging any good? If your website has an image and appeals to a defined market, certainly – you can make it work for you. But placing random ads around the page won’t do it. You need to create a brand and a following and the rest will come. 2Oceansvibe: Rockin’ stuff…and behind 2010
The whole country has gone Idols wild! Or maybe not. It seems this fatuous form of ‘entertainment’ is finally, mercifully, reaching the end of its useful lifespan. The odious judges and their propensity to make pernicious remarks apparently for ‘shock value’ and some sort of self-indulgent amusement may well be in its last season. One of the funniest things I have ever seen, however, comes to us courtesy of Idols and the ‘judges’. Not directly, mind you, but via the hilarious if self-possessed Seth Rotherham, of 2Oceansvibe.com. He’s managed to take the whole Idols schpiel to pieces rather magnificently. I strongly advise checking it out; especially his challenge to ‘judge’ Randall Abrahams…the Rocky video is priceless. Never mind how self possessed Seth is, though. I was very chuffed indeed to see his positive comments on the coming of the World Cup. Tickets are, as we have indicated on the news and blog parts of the site, on sale right now. They are affordable to just about anyone. Those okes who reckoned it would never happen for any one of a million reasons (some plausible, mind you. Others just plain ridiculous) must feel like right chops. But read what Sethy-boy says, he puts it best in his blog. I see too that while FIFA in its typically bullish approach to everything reckons it’s going to sell all 3.7 million seats available for the duration, Danny J is budgeting for 60% sales. The recession is going to play a part, y’see, although no-one is really sure how much of a part that will be. From my chat with Grant Thornton’s Gillian Saunders the other day, there hasn’t really yet been a World Cup with a world flush going on at the same time. We’re breaking new ground here. I get asked a lost of similar questions by a lot of people and was very impressed with Idea Bounty’s various angles in our recent interview, because it gave me the opportunity to lay it all down. Seriously, if you’re a South African who owns a blog and you don’t know about 2OceansVibe, then don’t even bother calling yourself a blogger, there’s just no point if you don’t know the big fish!
Seth Rotherham, editor of 2OceansVibe has been running his blog for about 6 years, so he knows the scene backwards. He’s done the blog awards thing, but he’s just far too cool for it these days. He now rolls in Ferrari’s and has the sexiest chicks crawling after him, that’s just how his life goes. His rockstar apartment in Camps Bay is stunning, I’ve been there, so I know. Covered in stylish furniture and the smell of expensive clothes hits you the minute you walk in – it’s heaven, in a nutshell.
Seth is Mr Camps Bay, you won’t get away with jack shit, believe me on this one. He’s such a popular blogger, that he’s just been featured on the front cover of the ‘Get it’ magazine, check it out..

Not only did the dude get front page, he also took up 3 pages..

This is how he rolls, always!
Get your butt over to 2OceansVibe and tickle his blog a little why don’t you – He’ll enjoy it, trust me!
Helen cracks 2Oceansvibe
That little website in Cape Town – www.2oceansvibe.com – with whom LSWZone shares a certain affinity, pulled off a coup this week by snaring the Premier of the Western Cape Helen Zille for its weather show on 2OceansvibeTV.
Helen Zille was voted the world’s best mayor in 2008 before becoming the Western Cape Premier after a crushing election victory over the ANC (The WCape is the only province/state not controlled by the ANC).
Melburnians will remember when John So became the world’s best mayor in 2007 – however, his was granted for his ’show pony’ status. Helen Zille could not be more different than Rock Star So. The Cape Town mayorship is a political position (much like in the USA) and she has determinedly placed Cape Town high on the world’s premier tourist destinations and led moves to improve the lot of the less advantaged citizens. Streets have been cleaned up, infrastructore work completed and generally Cape Town is a much safer place than it used to be.
Shrewdly, she agreed to an audience on 2Oceansvibe. Decked out in jeans and Pumas, have a look at the interview. She balked at announcing the weather in a bikini but pulled in Derek van Damme, the ETV weather man himself (he shows off some minime ‘temples of Venus’).
Here are some behind the scenes shots:
